In January, I had my first surf lesson back in Australia. It didn’t go well. For some stupid reason, I decided to do it all again in June whilst in Portugal. Perhaps enough time had passed, and I was looking back at January’s experiment with rose-coloured glasses. So I dragged myself out of bed one [...]

Lagos: We’re certainly not in Lisbon anymore
Portugal is a country that Australians hear little about. Sure, they used to quite fancy sailing the seas, they’re not bad at kicking a football and oh yeah, piri piri chicken? Isn’t that Portuguese? The first time I visited Portugal, I had very few plans. I took an overnight train to Lisbon from Madrid, and [...]
A country in a photo – Portugal
Portugal is the Land that Europe Forgot. I’m thinking of writing a letter to the country’s tourism minister saying just that; it should be part of the country’s tourist campaign. It’s funny how peeling paint on buildings, crumbled walls and sleeping dogs can have such an unmistakeable appeal. My memories of Portugal consist of these [...]
Planes, trains and automobiles… actually just trains, trains and more trains
Ugh. Three long distance trains, four metro trains, a bit of running, a lot of walking… and I’m still not even in Nice yet. I’m back in Barcelona, a 12-hour pit stop before my journey re-commences – two metros and two long, long trains, via Montpellier. (Sounds like The Amazing Race.) I am tired just [...]
Porto… and life on the road
Here I am in the home of port wine, Porto. I travelled four hours north, and it’s cold again. I knew it couldn’t last. Whilst waiting for this free Internet I developed a list of things that popped into my head, a bit of a stream of consciousness. So here’s an insight into my exciting [...]
Portugal – more than Jamie and Aurelia
I said goodbye to Madrid on Friday night after managing to fill in the day. Met Sarah who is from Sydney and we visited Palacio Real, Campo del Moro and Plaza Mayor. Wasn’t going to visit the palace as it was quite expensive and had already been to two palaces (they start to look the [...]
About me
I'm Caitlyn, a twenty-something Australian living in the Netherlands. Six years ago I crammed my life into a backpack affectionately called 'the Beast' and hit the road, anxious to see all the world's Olympic sites. Needless to say, I got a bit distracted along the way. Today I'm a tour guide in Europe, and blog about what I love; travel, sport and food.
Where’s Caitlyn?
In early May I'll be in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
In late May I'll be in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Albania and Montenegro.
